June May General meeting
Thursday,  June17th,  6.00 pm Rome time
Passing the Gavel and Special Guest Speaker Hon. Emma Bonino

“If I look back 50 years ago, if you look at women’s rights, I cannot even recognize my country, the change has been enormous,” “That doesn’t mean it is all done”.

Emma Bonino will discuss the struggle for women’s rights in Italy and abroad and the impact COVID-19 has had on women.

Few women have done more for women’s rights and liberty than Emma Bonino, a senator of the Italian Republic, who will talk to us about the struggle for women’s rights in Italy and abroad and the impact of COVID-19 on women.

Considered by many to be the conscience of the country, Senator Bonino is an Italian icon. As deputy to both the Italian (six times) and the European parliaments, foreign minister, and senator (twice)—among numerous other important positions—she has battled for civil rights and individual liberty, including divorce, abortion, legalization of drugs, and sexual and religious freedoms. She has fought for an end to capital punishment, female genital mutilation, and world hunger.

In 1975, Bonino funded the information center for abortion (CISA), and in 1997 she supported the international movement condemning discrimination against females in Afghanistan, ’Un Fiore per le Donne di Kabul’ (A Flower for the Women of Kabul).

Senator Bonino is also a champion of women’s rights in the countries of the African Union through the Maputo protocol. She is a founder of the nongovernmental organizations Non c’è Pace senza Giustizia (No Peace Without Justice), which supports the international protection and promotion of human rights and democracy, and Nessuno Tocchi Caino (Hands Off Cain), an international league that fights for the abolition of the death penalty.

Passing the Gavel, an AWAR Tradition

After Senator Bonino’s talk, we’ll celebrate the passing of the (virtual) gavel and greet the new board.

In honor of AWAR's longstanding tradition, the June General Meeting features the passing of the gavel from the current board to the incoming board, from one President to the next, in preparation for the upcoming membership term July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022.

Pour a glass of something festive and join us for this exciting General Meeting, the last of the year—and just maybe the last online.
