about us

Founded in 1955 at the suggestion of then U.S. Ambassador to Italy, Clare Boothe Luce, the American Women’s Association of Rome is a non-political, non-sectarian, and not-for-profit organization. We are professionals, diplomats, artists, authors, historians, chefs, translators, creators, business owners, homemakers and citizens of the world (65% from the U.S. and 35% from over 20 different countries). AWAR strives to sustain an inclusive culture that embraces and celebrates our differences and diverse backgrounds. Participating in AWAR offers unique opportunities for personal enrichment and connection to the community.

Two Cultures Joined By a Feminine Figure

On the left, the goddess Venus, ancestress of Rome, appears on an ancient Roman coin which has been embedded in a laurel leaf to become the symbolic medallion of AWAR.  On the right, she appears on one of the famed Liberty gold coins which were first minted in the United States in 1838.

Our Global Connection

A member of AWAR is also a member of the Federation of American Women's Clubs Overseas, an international network of independent women's groups. FAWCO serves as a resource and a voice for American women living and working abroad. Founded in 1931, the organization is a global NGO and, since 1997, has held special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council.

FAWCO currently connects 56 clubs in 28 countries worldwide, advocating for the rights of U.S. citizens overseas. It also seeks to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide, especially in the areas of human rights, health, education and the environment.

Please visit fawco.org to find out more about this global network and register as a member (included in your AWAR membership). You can attend interesting virtual events, become a delegate for international advocacy programs, find scholarships available for FAWCO members’ children and grandchildren, and much more!
