Founded in 1955 at the suggestion of then U.S. Ambassador to Italy, Clare Boothe Luce, The American Women’s Association of Rome (AWAR) is a non-political, non-sectarian and not-for-profit organization.
Our mission is to promote friendship among our members and understanding between Italy and the United States through cultural, social, and educational events, and community service.
Today, AWAR is a vibrant community of dynamic, global women who value friendship, charity, and culture. Our members come from all over the world (65% from the U.S. and 35% from 22 different countries).
We are professional women, diplomats, artists, authors, historians, readers, chefs, translators, travelers, musicians... and so much more! Together we celebrate our time in Rome and share special opportunities to experience culture, volunteer, support charitable work, and have fun, too!
A member of AWAR is also a member of FAWCO, an international network of independent women's groups with consultative status at the United Nations. FAWCO serves as a resource and a voice for its members; seeks to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide, especially in the areas of human rights, health, education and the environment; advocates for the rights of U.S. citizens overseas.
