Founded in 1955 at the suggestion of then U.S. Ambassador to Italy, Clare Boothe Luce, the American Women’s Association of Rome is a non-political, non-sectarian, and not-for-profit organization.
We are professionals, diplomats, artists, authors, historians, chefs, translators, musicians, and citizens of the world (65% from the U.S. and 35% from 22 different countries). Participating in AWAR offers unique opportunities for personal enrichment and connection to the community.
A member of AWAR is also a member of FAWCO, an international network of independent women's groups with consultative status at the United Nations. FAWCO serves as a resource and a voice for its members, seeks to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide, and advocates for the rights of U.S. citizens overseas.
AWAR is proud to continue Ambassador Luce's vision, as we recognize the current U.S. Ambassador to Italy as our Honorary President.
