April general meeting with special guest Carole Beebe Tarantelli
The first American citizen to be elected to Italy's Parliament.
and a special thank you for the donation of the proceeds of AWAR’s Roman Kitchen cookbook from Dott.ssa Maria Siclari-Vice Capo Protezione Civile
Working through the assassination of her husband she entered into politics and became the first American/Italian parliament member.
She will discuss her life, her take on the new US Administration and her work as a therapist in how to overcome trauma.
Carole Beebe Tarantelli was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on July 12, 1942. She graduated from Wellesley College, near Boston, then attended the University of Michigan, where she earned an M.A. in English literature before moving on to Brandeis University, where she earned a Ph.D. in English literature.
At Brandeis, she met Ezio Tarantelli, an Italian labor economist. They married in 1970 and moved to Italy, where their son, Luca, was born. Ezio was assassinated by Red Brigade terrorists in 1985. Carole decided to stay in Italy and work through the trauma of what happened; her job and life were here in Italy.
Her story is one of survival and the incredible triumph of overcoming this tragic event. She was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1987, the first American ever elected to the Italian parliament. There she focused on women’s issues, including legislation focusing on rape, domestic violence, abortion, and family leave. In 1988 she helped found Differenza Donna, an organization dedicated to combating violence against women, and was its president from 1988 to 1995. She started teaching at the University of Rome and in 1979 started her training as a psychoanalyst and began her private practice in 1982.
Before our speaker’s talk, we’ll welcome dott.ssa Maria Siclari, Vice Capo press office of the Protezione Civile, which has now received the promised donation from the proceeds of AWAR’s Roman Kitchen: Food and Memories.
Grab a comfortable seat and a glass of whatever you like and join us for this stimulating lecture/aperitivo at 18.00 Rome time. We’ll cover a few general AWAR topics and then meet our interesting guests.
