Join AWAR for a tour of the magnificent costume warehouse of Umberto Tirelli!

Umberto Tirelli opened his atelier in November 1964 with two sewing machines, five seamstresses, a milliner, a secretary, and a driver. He was an avid collector of antique clothing, traveling the globe to search for pieces in attics and flea markets stalls, and he patiently built an impressive haul that has grown into one of the most important private clothing collections in the worldTirelli made an effort to give life to historical clothes, collaborating with and lending to costume designers and prestigious museums. He worked with theater and opera houses, as well as film directors, winning multiple Oscars for Tirelli costumes.

In Formello, north of Rome off of the Cassia Bis, there is a 7,000 sq warehouse storing more than 15,000 authentic period dresses and over 300,000 costumes hung by genre and era, initially collected and later produced by the tailor shop that Tirelli himself founded. Together with the sketches and preparatory drawings kept by the company, this treasure trove of five decades worth of scenic art has no equal.

The tour will last approximately two hours, and we will be led by a guide in English.

When: Friday, March 14, 10:00 am

Where: Via degli Olmetti 44, Formello. If we have enough ladies to carpool, we can establish meeting points. It's about 20 minutes by car from Ponte Milvio.

Donation: 40 per person, guests welcome

Built on the original nucleus of the residence of Cardinal Fazio Santoro dated to the early 16th century, the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj is a rich concentration of art and history. The grandiose residence is the result of evolutions, annexations, and enlargements over five hundred years.

Visitors will be able to enjoy an exclusive approach to the collection in an atmosphere similar to that which guests breathed in the second half of the 1700s. The tour opens in the large reception rooms, richly furnished and magnificently decorated. We'll see the heart of the exhibition in the Four Arms of the Gallery, overlooking Bramante's internal courtyard with its splendid Renaissance arches. Continuing on to two large adjacent rooms, the Sala Aldobrandini and the Sala dei Primitivi, we'll see masterpieces of the private collection of the Doria Pamphilj family.

Our guide: Livia Galante was born in Rome, where she studied archaeology at La Sapienza. She also has a Bachelor's in History and Conservation of the Artistic Heritage and a Master's in Early Christian Architecture. She's been working as an Authorized Guide of Rome since 2001. She also cooperates with important Travel Companies offering high level cultural tours (ContextTravel, Italy Finest) and collaborates, as a cultural tour guide, with the CIEE and CEA Study Abroad, as well as the U.S. Embassy. You may remember her as our guide from our fabulous tour of Pallazzo Colonna in January of this year.

When: Saturday, March 22, 10:30 am (the tour is about 2.5 hours)

Cost: 35 (includes ticket, tour guide, and headsets). Tip is not included so feel free to bring a few euros if you’d like to offer one to our guide at the end of the tour. This is optional.

Maximum of 20 people, guests are welcome.
